Can a Toothache Go Away on Its Own?

Written by Dr. Frank Hackman, DDS, practicing dentist serving Northridge, Porter Ranch, and surrounding communities.

Can a toothache go away on its own? Sometimes the pain fades temporarily, but the underlying cause usually remains. Cavities, infections, cracked teeth, and gum disease do not heal without treatment. If you’ve had tooth pain, it’s best to have it evaluated.

Don't ignore tooth pain

Many patients ask us the same question:

“My tooth was hurting a few days ago, but now it feels better. Do I still need to have it checked?”

It’s a reasonable thought — if the pain is gone, it’s easy to assume the problem resolved itself. But in dentistry, that’s rarely what’s happening.

At All Family Dental Care, we often see toothaches that disappear temporarily while the underlying issue continues to progress. In some cases, the pain stops because the nerve inside the tooth is becoming damaged, not because the tooth is healing.

Why Tooth Pain Comes and Goes

Teeth don’t regenerate or heal the way skin or soft tissue does. Once decay, infection, or structural damage begins, it typically continues until treated.

Pain may fade for several reasons:

Inflammation around the tooth decreases temporarily

The nerve becomes less responsive

Irritating foods or temperatures are avoided

Pressure on the tooth changes

But here’s the key point:

Common Causes of Tooth Pain We See in Our Northridge Office

Patients often call us because they’re unsure whether their discomfort is serious. The most frequent causes include:

  • Cavities and tooth decay
  • Cracked or fractured teeth
  • Gum disease
  • Dental infections or abscesses
  • Worn fillings or crowns
  • Teeth grinding or clenching
  • Impacted teeth
  • Exposed roots causing sensitivity

Some of these issues progress slowly. Others can worsen quickly.

Is It Good News If the Pain Stops?

Not necessarily.

When decay or infection reaches the nerve, the nerve can begin to die. As this happens, pain may decrease or disappear entirely.

Patients often assume the tooth is improving — but the infection may still be spreading into the bone or surrounding tissues.

This is why we remind patients:

Signs You Should Schedule an Evaluation

Even if the pain has improved, you should have the tooth examined if you’ve experienced:

  • Pain when chewing
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Swelling around the gums
  • A cracked or chipped tooth
  • Repeated episodes of discomfort
  • Bleeding gums
  • A bad taste or odor from the tooth

These symptoms often indicate an issue that won’t resolve on its own.

What We Commonly See in Our Office

After years of treating families throughout Northridge and the surrounding communities, we’ve noticed a pattern:

Many patients wait because the pain becomes manageable or disappears. Weeks or months later, the discomfort returns, often worse than before.

The earlier we evaluate a problem, the more treatment options are available and the simpler the solution tends to be.

We’re Here to Help

If you’ve experienced a toothache, whether it’s ongoing or has already gone away — Dr. Frank Hackman and the team at All Family Dental Care can help determine the cause and recommend the right treatment.
