Why Do My Gums Bleed When I Brush? Common Causes and When to Be Concerned
If you’ve ever noticed pink in the sink after brushing your teeth, you’re not alone. Bleeding gums are one of the most common reasons patients mention during dental visits. While occasional bleeding may seem harmless, healthy gums generally should not bleed during brushing or flossing.
Bleeding gums are often your body’s first warning sign that something isn’t quite right. The good news is that many causes are treatable—especially when addressed early.
The Most Common Cause: Gum Disease
The leading cause of bleeding gums is gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease.
Gingivitis develops when plaque—a sticky film of bacteria—builds up along the gumline. The bacteria irritate the gums, causing inflammation that makes them red, swollen, tender, and more likely to bleed during brushing or flossing.
Fortunately, gingivitis is reversible with professional dental care and improved oral hygiene at home.
If left untreated, however, gingivitis can progress into periodontal disease, a more serious infection that damages the tissues and bone supporting your teeth. Advanced gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults.

Although plaque buildup is the most common culprit, several other factors can contribute to bleeding gums.
1. You’re New to Flossing
If you’ve recently started flossing after a long break, your gums may bleed for a few days as inflamed tissue begins to heal. With consistent daily flossing, the bleeding should gradually decrease.
2. Brushing Too Hard
Many people believe brushing harder cleans better. In reality, aggressive brushing can irritate your gums and even wear away enamel over time.
Using a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle circular motions is usually the safest and most effective approach.
3. Pregnancy Hormones
Hormonal changes during pregnancy can increase blood flow to the gums, making them more sensitive and prone to bleeding. This condition, often called pregnancy gingivitis, is common and should be monitored by both your dentist and physician.
4. Certain Medications
Blood thinners, aspirin, and some other medications can make bleeding more noticeable. Never stop taking prescribed medications without consulting your healthcare provider, but be sure to tell your dentist about any medications you’re taking.
5. Vitamin Deficiencies
Although less common, deficiencies in vitamins such as Vitamin C or Vitamin K may contribute to gum bleeding. Maintaining a balanced diet supports both oral and overall health.
When Should You Be Concerned?
Occasional minor bleeding after flossing may not be an emergency. However, you should schedule a dental evaluation if you notice:
Bleeding every time you brush or floss
Swollen, red, or tender gums
Persistent bad breath
Receding gums
Loose teeth
Pus around the gums
Bleeding that continues for more than a week despite improved brushing and flossing
These symptoms may indicate gum disease that requires professional treatment.
How Dr. Frank Hackman Treats Bleeding Gums
Treatment depends on the underlying cause.
Dr. Frank Hackman can perform a thorough examination to evaluate your gum health, measure the depth of the gum pockets around your teeth, and determine whether gingivitis or periodontal disease is present. Call us today for an appointment at (818) 709-9988
Treatment may include:
Professional dental cleaning to remove plaque and tartar
Scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) if gum disease is present
Personalized home care recommendations
More frequent cleanings to help control gum disease
Early treatment is often simpler, more comfortable, and less expensive than waiting until gum disease becomes advanced.
How You Can Help Prevent Bleeding Gums
Healthy gums start with consistent daily habits.
To reduce your risk of gum disease:
Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Floss once every day.
Use fluoride toothpaste.
Replace your toothbrush every three to four months.
Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals.
Avoid tobacco products.
Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and examinations.
Small daily habits can make a significant difference in protecting your smile.
Don’t Ignore Bleeding Gums
Bleeding gums are often your body’s early warning system. Catching problems early can help prevent more serious dental issues, including bone loss and tooth loss.
If you’ve noticed bleeding while brushing or flossing, don’t assume it’s normal. A professional dental examination can identify the cause and help keep your gums—and your smile—healthy for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions
Healthy gums generally should not bleed. Occasional bleeding may occur if you’ve recently started flossing, but persistent bleeding often signals inflammation or early gum disease.
If bleeding is caused by mild gingivitis, improving your brushing, flossing, and receiving a professional cleaning can often reverse the condition. More advanced gum disease requires professional treatment.
No. Unless your dentist advises otherwise, continue flossing gently each day. Consistent flossing helps remove plaque that contributes to gum inflammation.
Stress itself doesn’t directly cause bleeding gums, but it can weaken the immune system and contribute to habits that increase the risk of gum disease.
Most patients benefit from dental examinations and professional cleanings every six months. Patients with periodontal disease may require more frequent visits based on their individual needs.

The friendliest dentist and staff in town! I want to thank the receptionists for their kindness toward my daughter, who is no fan of dentist appointments. Dr. Hackman and his dental hygienists are real pros, delivering outstanding pain free results.
I have been a patient of Dr. Hackman for almost 20 years! Time really does fly. He has seen my entire family, through pregnancies (which was hard on my teeth), we have been cash and insurance patients. He has always provided the best service for us. My kids are teenagers now and he has taken care of their cleanings, procedures and I am grateful that they have only had positive dental experiences. I have had complicated dental issues and it wasn’t until Dr. Hackman took over my care that I feel like I am in great hands.
Real patient here: Been seeing Dr Hackman for 15 plus years. He’s always been very kind and professional, and he has always provided top level service for my oral care. He is trustworthy and I never got the feeling he was trying to profit off of me I highly recommend seeing him if you’re looking for a solid dentist who you can trust.
Dr. Hackman & his team are the very best. I am a long time client. I’ve been to many dentists but, he is the only one that stands out. Thank you Dr. Hackman!

If I could give Dr hackman a 10 star review I happiiy would without batting an eyelash. I’m a sissy when It comes to dentists and doctors and this guy took care of me painlessly and with the greatest degree of professionalism I have ever experienced with any medical specialist. I came in for 4 extractions Ns was out in an hour with no bleeding or swelling or pain. Hands down the best dentist in the valley and maybe the country!!!!
Frank Hackman is by far the best dentist I have ever had. As someone who had childhood dental trauma that still has me nervous every time I go into a dentist. I’ve been to 2 other dentsists in the last 20 years. One was very disorganized and seemed uncomfortable doing the work. The last one I thought was the “pro” but for insurance reasons I came to All Family Dental. Well after 4 years of cleanings, and one cracked tooth repair, I recently had to have crown re-done by dentist number 2 “the pro” and was amazed at how Dr. Hackman was fast, efficient, and extremely competent. The original dentist that put in this crown left cement on my teeth, it did not fit well, and did not take post x-rays to check the fit. The fitting with Hackman required very little teeth grinding adjustments. It’s like the crown was made just for my mouth! His staff also works well with my insurance. 5 stars! Thanks you All Family Dental Care.
I’ve been going to MD Hackman for more then 15 years. Md Hackman Thank You So so Much for taking care of me with all the D issues that I was going thru. I could Never Thank You much for all you have done for me. I’ve been coming here for some time and have always had great experiences. Dr. Hackman is a world-class dentist, highly competent and passionate about what he does, with many years of experience. What I especially admire about him is his thorough attention to detail and that he takes pride in his work. Also, it is remarkable to see how the organizational culture in his office is so patient centered. Every time I went there, the care provided was tailored to my individual needs and preferences.
I highly recommend Dr. Hackman to all my friends and family, and anyone who is looking for a new dentist.
Best experience with a dental office ever. They are friendly, professional and efficient. What I appreciate the most is their honesty they don’t push unnecessary procedures on you like most. Been a patient for years you will be pleased with them. Keep up there great work guys ??
As time flys by, noticed that I haven’t been to the dentist in quite some time( years). Recommended by a friend who suggested this clinic and after an initial consultation is when Dr H. performed the needed dental work that was necessary….4 crowns, a filling, a cleaning, and a root canal. I must say Doctor Hackman and staff exceeded my expectations in that they are caring, efficient, and give that “extra mile” type of care. Truly unexpected! If you are on a budget, like myself, having a teenage son, daughter who’s going to college( many expenses) then you need to see Dr. H. He’s a good hearted dentist(rare),in that he explains dental procedures one on one with patience and kindness ,he also works with his patients to provide dental care that’s fair and affordable to different financial situations. 2 thumbs up to this office/staff.

My whole family has been coming here for years. Dr. Hackman is friendly, works quickly, and explains what needs to be done with your procedures. Whenever I or any of my family members had an emergency, the office staff would always let us come in, even on Saturdays. I highly recommend him.
I have been going to Doctor Hackman for 15 years. He has always made sure that I am comfortable and not feeling pain when he is working on my teeth. He is a very honest and caring doctor, it is very rare to find now a days. I highly recommend him to all my family and friends.
Great dentist and staff especially Gaby at the front desk makes it very welcoming. He’s very gentle with child patients. My daughter is always put in a hugging blanket but the first time here was perfect. She felt very comfortable with Dr Hackman she barely felt anything and she got teeth pulled out…. She’s 7. Definitely recommend this dentist. They’re very honest with their work and will even recommend other dentists if needed. Loved it here.
